Emirates ID is the UAE Government-issued identity card for the UAE’s citizens and residents. It is mandatory for all UAE citizens and residents to apply for an Emirates ID. To apply for a new or renew your UAE Emirates ID for 2024, follow the below steps.
Requirements for Emirates ID Photo for UAE
A personal photo under the requirements by the Identity Citizenship and Ports Authority (ICP) which are:

You can order an Emirates ID digital soft copy or a physical copy as well, depending on your needs.
If this is for your first Emirates ID, you will also have to provide your biometric details, which will be your fingerprints.

You may have to wait up to 5 days to receive your new Emirates ID card.

Fines & Grace Period
There is a 30 day grace period, where you can apply for a new ID and receive no fines. If you go past the limit, the fines will be on a per day basis of AED 20, stacking up to a max total of AED 1000.

Additional Questions
Is this photo useable for other passport photos?
- The Emirates ID photo requirements are unique to that of the UAE with the size being 35x40mm. This size is not popularly used in other passport/ visa purposes. Therefore using the same photo may result in rejected applications, however there are exceptions made on a case by case basis in certain embassies / agencies.
Is the Emirates ID the same as the UAE residential visa?
- The UAE visa has since been scraped and is no longer issued, all residents are now required to only have a valid Emirates ID, for their residency in the UAE.
What are the uses of the Emirates ID?
- Certain companies allow you to use your Emirates ID as a payment option. ADNOC allows you to attach your ID on their app, to then be able to use that ID as a payment option for fuel-ups, or purchases at their store. Certain banks also allow you to use the ID to withdraw money from an ATM. An Emirates ID is also used at medical facilities to help attach records such as prescriptions and medical history. Certain theme-parks, waterparks, or hotels also have residential discounts that require you to present your Emirates ID to avail these discounts.
